Laser marking plastics with a 1064 nm fiber laser changes the polymer itself: a dark carbonized mark on light resins, or a light foamed mark on dark ones, with no ink, label, or consumable. PEEK, Ultem (PEI), nylon, ABS, and polycarbonate mark well. Natural acetal, polypropylene, and polyethylene need a laser-marking additive. Results depend on the exact grade, colorant, and filler, so we qualify on a sample coupon before production.

How laser marking plastics works at 1064 nm.
A polymer marks only if something in it absorbs the laser wavelength. At 1064 nm that is sometimes the resin and more often the pigment, the filler, or an additive. Where energy is absorbed, one of two things happens. On light-colored resins the polymer carbonizes and the mark reads dark gray to black. On dark resins, typically those colored with carbon black, the surface foams: gas bubbles form in a thin melted layer and scatter light, and the mark reads light gray to tan and sits slightly proud of the surface.
Pulse control decides which result appears and how clean its edges are. The JPT M7 MOPA source adjusts pulse width from 2 to 500 ns, which keeps heat input low enough to avoid melted edges on small text and Data Matrix modules. The mark is a change in the material, not a layer on top of it, so there is nothing to rub off or dissolve in cleaning agents. Capabilities lists the equipment.
We run a fiber source only, with no CO2 or UV laser, so materials that need those wavelengths are outside our range. That includes water-clear and transparent grades, which transmit 1064 nm, and natural polyolefins and fluoropolymers without an additive.
Laser-marking additives for PP, PE, and acetal.
A laser-marking additive is a masterbatch or pre-compounded ingredient that absorbs 1064 nm energy and converts it into a local color change. It goes in at the molder, at a low loading, and it is how polypropylene, polyethylene, natural acetal, and TPU parts are made markable. Resin suppliers also offer laser-markable versions of many standard grades.
If you control the resin specification and the part must carry a permanent mark, selecting a laser-markable grade at the design stage is the most reliable route. If the resin is fixed and does not respond, the fallback is a laser-marked acrylate label bonded to the part: see asset tags and, for IUID content under MIL-STD-130, UID labels.

Contrast on plastics runs from strong, as on natural PEEK and white ABS, to marginal. Two parts in the same resin from different molders can mark differently because the colorant package differs. Data Matrix readability is therefore rated per grade, not per polymer family, which is how the material marking guide lists it.
Send a molded coupon or a few scrap parts in the production resin and color. They come back marked, with the recommended process and a read-back result, before you release the drawing. Production codes are then read back 100% and graded per ISO/IEC 15415, or AIM DPM-1-2006 for direct part marks; see quality. On low-contrast grades a larger module size buys reading margin. Treat the mark as qualified for a specific resin, colorant, and filler. A change of color or resin supplier is a reason to re-check the mark, like any other process change. For device housings and components, medical device marking covers UDI content. Biocompatibility and sterilization validation of the marked part remain with the device manufacturer; we supply marked samples for that work.

General behavior at 1064 nm. Metals are more predictable; if the part could be anodized aluminum or stainless instead, contrast stops being a question.

- Natural (beige) PEEK carbonizes to a sharp dark mark with strong contrast. Black and carbon-filled PEEK mark light. Filled grades are consistent.
- PEI (Ultem)
- Natural amber Ultem takes a dark mark. Opaque colored grades vary with the pigment.
- Nylon PA6 / PA66
- Marks well, and glass-filled grades mark more consistently than unfilled. Black glass-filled nylon gives a light mark; natural and light colors go dark.
- ABS · PC · PC/ABS
- Opaque grades mark in both directions: dark on white and light colors, light on black. Housing colorants vary between molders, so qualify each color.
- PBT · PET · PPS
- Mark well. Usually glass-filled, which helps consistency; contrast depends on the base color.
- Acetal / Delrin (POM)
- Black and pigmented acetal marks light. Natural white acetal responds poorly at 1064 nm without a laser-marking additive.
- PP · PE · TPU
- Natural grades respond poorly. Laser-additive grades mark well; the additive is compounded in by the molder.

Calling out the mark on a drawing.
On plastics the material note matters as much as the marking note. Lock the resin grade and colorant, and reference an approved sample for mark appearance instead of naming a color. Typical notes:

Which plastics can be laser marked with a fiber laser?
PEEK, PEI (Ultem), PPS, ABS, opaque polycarbonate and PC/ABS, PBT, PET, and nylon, especially glass-filled grades, mark well with a 1064 nm fiber laser. Black and pigmented acetal marks. Natural polypropylene, polyethylene, and acetal respond poorly unless they contain a laser-marking additive. Results vary with colorant and filler, so we recommend a sample coupon before a drawing is released.
Can you laser mark Delrin (acetal)?
Black and pigmented acetal, yes: it takes a light mark. Natural white acetal responds poorly at 1064 nm and needs a laser-marking additive or a laser-markable grade from the resin supplier. If the resin cannot change, a laser-marked label is the practical alternative.
What is a laser-marking additive?
An ingredient compounded into the resin, usually as a masterbatch at the molder, that absorbs laser energy at 1064 nm and turns it into a local color change. It is what makes polypropylene, polyethylene, natural acetal, and TPU markable with a fiber laser. The additive has to be in the resin before molding; it cannot be applied afterward.
Can you mark clear or transparent plastics?
Generally not. Water-clear and transparent grades transmit the 1064 nm wavelength, so there is little absorption to form a mark, and we do not run CO2 or UV lasers. Opaque colored grades of the same polymer usually mark well. For a clear part, a laser-marked label is the usual answer.
